Gerald M Monahan, Sr. Scholarship Information
The Scholarship is open to all students in High School or College
Gerald M. Monahan, Sr. served as an Allentown police officer from 1950 to 1970. During his tenure as Police Chief from 1960 to 1970, he established the Allentown Police Academy, now the second oldest police Academy in Pennsylvania. The Academy was rededicated in Chief Monahans name in June of 1998, five months after his passing. Thousands of officers from Pennsylvania and, in fact from all over the United States, have received new recruit and in-service training at the Academy in the more than four decades that it has been in operation.
This scholarship has been established in Gerald M. Monahan Sr. memory by a generous contribution from Judge Robert L. Steinberg and will continue under the sponsorship of the Allentown Police Athletic League and the support of Chief Monahan's friends and family. Chief Monahan was a visionary Chief who recognized the importance of education and training in the field of Law Enforcement. This memorial scholarship will provide much needed assistance to students who are preparing for a rewarding career in criminal justice or a college education while advocating the importance of education at the time of its inception.
PAL also administers the Gerald M. Monahan Scholarship Fund: This scholarship is funded by private donations. Information for anyone interested in applying for the scholarship is mailed to area high schools and guidance offices. Applications are then reviewed by a board and distributed accordingly.
PAL is a nonprofit orgaization which operates on a budget funded only by the PAL snack shop and private donations. It is our sincere hope that corporations find this organization a valuable tool and will assist with funding to continue this very successful program.
